honoring a legend...

Kumu Robert Uluwehi Cazimero
One morning as I was having my "quiet" time, I was led by Spirit to create a collection, honoring Kumu Robert Uluwehi Cazimero, in conjunction with his 70th Birthday. It was VERY clear. As I sat there, I got "chills" pondering this project. What would I call it? Then immediately, it came to me....ULUWEHI (duh). I had no idea what it would "look" like. I did know that I would let Spirit guide me in the creative process.
On one of his visits up to my hale, I knew I had to ask his permission to do this, and so I shared what came to me. He humbly told me, "you no need ask permission, but YES, let's do this".
I enlisted the help of one of Robert's long time dancers from his Halau Na Kamalei o Lililehua, my friend Keola. He loaned me his hula implements to photograph. At that point, I STILL had no idea what it would look like, but I photographed the implements and then the "playing around" began. I asked for Divine Guidance every step of the way.
Spirit also guided me to contribute a percentage of sales to Robert's foundation, The Wahea Foundation. Founded in 2011, The Wahea Foundation promotes the preservation and protection of Native Hawaiian culture as expressed through hula. With every purchase, you will be making a contribution to this very valuable cause. Mahalo in advance!
After several months, the process was complete. The prints represent HULA . I used colors that I felt represented Robert's innovative style.
With gratitude for your life long contribution to the Hawaiian Culture, Hawaiian Music, and HULA....I am honored to honor you and celebrate your legacy! Mahalo Nui, Robert, for your aloha , friendship, and support...this one's for YOU!
Mahalo Ola for your kokua during this process. Mahalo Boongie and Dean for being my models! I aloha you all.
